Rhinoplasty – Cost, Recovery & Risks –

updated September 6, 2017

Rhinoplasty is among the five most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States, with more than 200,000 procedures performed in 2013 alone.[1] During the procedure, a plastic surgeon sculpts the cartilage and bone of the nose to achieve apatient’s desired look. For men and women who are unhappy with the size and shape of their nose, rhinoplasty, otherwise known asnose reshaping surgery or a “nose job,” offers a safe, effective, and time-tested cosmetic solution. When performed by anexperienced, skilled cosmetic surgeon, rhinoplasty can greatly improve the balance of facial features, helping patients discover newfound confidence.Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct structural defects, including those that cause breathing problems.

If you have considered undergoing rhinoplasty, there are a few important things to consider. Here you can learn more about the procedure, its costs, the possible risks and benefits, and much more.

The majority of individuals who undergo nose reshaping surgery are dissatisfied with the appearance of their noses and wish to improve the proportions oftheir facial features. A smaller percentage of rhinoplasty candidates are patients who deal with discomfort or breathing difficulties due to structuralabnormalities or previous nose injuries. The optimal candidates for rhinoplasty are in good general health, understand the risks associated with surgery, and have realistic expectations regarding the surgery results.

A good candidate for nose-reshaping cosmetic surgery may:

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among teenagers. It is important for teenage patients and their surgeons to consider whether ornot nose reshaping is an appropriate cosmetic surgery option. Doctors should ensure that the decision to undergo rhinoplasty is the patient’s own choice, rather than the result of peer or parental pressure. Regardless of the reason for surgery, doctors recommend that girls wait until age 14 or 15, and thatboys wait a few additional years to undergo rhinoplasty. By this time, the nose should have finished growing.

Rhinoplasty can be used to modify the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose. In some cases, a plastic surgeon may recommend that a chin implantbe inserted at the same time. This will help to balance out the facial features more completely. Many times, rhinoplasty patients ask their surgeons to:

In most cases, the incisions used for nose reshaping cosmetic surgery can be hidden inside the nose or placed inconspicuously outside it. Minimal scarringfits in with the overall goal of improving appearance and maintaining a natural look.

The best way for a patient to determine his or her candidacy for rhinoplasty is to schedule a consultation with a qualified surgeon. The physician willassess medical history, skin quality, cosmetic goals, and mental preparedness before recommending treatment.

Because rhinoplasty is different for each patient, the cost of rhinoplasty treatment will vary depending on a number of factors. Patients should discuss the total cost of surgery with their physicians, as well as payment and financing options.

Rhinoplasty can cost between $3,000 and $15,000 depending on your surgeon’s reputation and level of expertise, the complexity of your surgery, the geographic location of your surgeon’s practice, and many other factors. Read Full Article

There are several considerations that will determine the final cost of rhinoplasty. These include:

It is important for patients to remember that facility costs, anesthesia fees, and post-operative care are not always included in the initial treatmentestimate. For a more accurate figure, patients should inqure about these costs and related fees.

When rhinoplasty is performed primarily for cosmetic purposes, it is rarely covered by insurance. However, insurance companies will often pay for procedures to correct a deviated septum or other breathingissues. A doctor’s administrative staff can help patients determine whether they are eligible for insurance coverage. In many cases, they will even filethe claim and handle any other paperwork.

Doctors realize that most rhinoplasty patients are not eligible for insurance coverage. For this reason, many surgeons offer in-house financing options. With approved credit, patients may be eligible for low-interest or fixed-interest repayment plans. Additionally, many doctors offer significant discounts when patients pay fortheir procedures in full prior to treatment. Most cosmetic surgery practices accept cash, check, and all major credit cards.

When patients are researching their payment options, they should also consider third-party financing. Many lenders offer fixed-interest repayment plans. Patients who pay within a specific time frame may even be eligible for a no-interest plan. Adoctor’s office team can explain more about these options and help patients choose the repayment schedule that best fits their budget.

Rhinoplasty can have dramatic lifelong effects on a patient’s appearance. Therefore, patients should be extremely judicious when choosing their plasticsurgeon. Ideally, they should talk to several doctors before making their final choice. When interviewing doctors, there are several important things toconsider.

Patients should seek out a surgeon who has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. This certification ensures that adoctor adheres to stringent standards of safety and ethics, and that he or she performs procedures approved by the board. It is also important to find asurgeon who has been certified by the state medical board.

Additional affiliations and certifications can indicate that a doctor has extensive experience and a good reputation. Other notable plastic surgeryaffiliations include:

All doctors are legally permitted to perform rhinoplasty, but only a qualified surgeon can ensure safety and good cosmetic results. Patients should choosea doctor who focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. If possible, they may want to find a surgeon who specializes in facial procedures and nosereshaping.

When interviewing doctors, prospective patients should ask them about their approach to rhinoplasty. It is important to choose a doctor who addresses theairways, as well as the external structure of the nose. Even if a patient is undergoing the procedure for purely cosmetic reasons, the doctor should workto protect the nasal passages so that the patient can maintain normal breathing patterns.

While some doctors work at a nearby hospital, many work at outpatient surgical centers. These facilities should be certified by the American Associationfor Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. To earn this accreditation, a center must maintain high safety standards and offer the proper equipment.

When doctors operate at these outpatient centers, they should have hospital privileges with at least one local medical center. A doctor must pass rigorousscreenings to earn these privileges, so patients can rest assured that their surgeon maintains proper ethical and safety standards. Surgical complicationsduring rhinoplasty are extremely rare. However, hospital privileges ensure that a patient will have access to emergency care in the unlikely event thatsomething does go wrong.

Naturally, patients should choose a doctor who has a good reputation for success. Individuals should ask friends, family, and general practitioners forrecommendations. Additionally, all state medical boards are required to make a doctor’s information public. Patients may access these records to look forany past lawsuits or infractions. In many areas, these records are available online, but in some states, they can only be accessed through the mail.

Rhinoplasty is a highly personal procedure that can affect a person’s mental well-being, as well as his or her appearance. Therefore, it is vital thatpatients choose a surgeon with whom they feel comfortable. They should select a doctor who truly listens to their concerns, answers their questions, andcreates a treatment plan that will address their specific goals. Patients should never choose someone who makes unrealistic promises or pressures them toundergo more surgery than they actually want.

Additionally, almost all doctors have galleries of their past work. Patients should closely examine these galleries and ask themselves:

By following these guidelines and choosing a doctor with whom they feel comfortable, patients are more likely to be satisfied with the results of theirprocedure.

After a patient has selected a plastic surgeon, the doctor schedules a comprehensive consultation. This allows patient and doctor to develop a personalrelationship and begin planning out the treatment.

Before anything else, the surgeon determines a patient’s candidacy for rhinoplasty. He or she takes the patient’s health history, asks about medicationsand whether the patient smokes, and addresses other concerns. It is important for the patient to be honest with the doctor. Withholding certain informationcould increase the risk of surgical complications.

Rhinoplasty can effectively reshape and balance the nose for an improved appearance and boosted confidence. It can also correct breathing issues and other functional defects. Read Full Article

Smoking does not necessarily disqualify a patient from rhinoplasty, but he or she will need to stop forat least two weeks before and two weeks after the procedure. Additionally, certain medications can inhibit healing. If possible, doctor may recommend saferalternatives. Of course, the doctor also examines the patient’s nose. He or she checks skin quality, shape, the amount of tissue, and the condition of theseptum.

After the doctor determines that a patient is physically qualified for surgery, he or she asks about the aesthetic or health-related objectives. Whenseeking rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, patients may want to bring in pictures of what they want their noses to look like. An exact replication may notbe possible. However, these images will help the doctor create a treatment plan in keeping with the patient’s cosmetic goals.

Plastic surgeons typically encourage patients to be active participants in their care, and they will work together to develop a treatment plan. Among otherthings, they will discuss:

Nose reshaping surgery can be divided into several types of rhinoplasty, depending on a patient’s goals for treatment.

When you are unhappy with the look of your nose, or have functional complications that make it difficult for you to breathe, it can compromise your quality of life. There are several types of rhinoplasty designed to meet a range of needs. Read Full Article

Reduction rhinoplasty is one of the most common types of nose reshaping surgery. This procedure can give a patient a nose that is more proportionate to theother facial features. In particular, it can address bumps on the bridge of the nose, an elongated nasal tip, or excessively flared nostrils. The doctorremoves small amounts of bone or cartilage to achieve the desired results. To reduce the size of the nostrils, the doctor may need to use a techniquecalled alar base reduction. During this process, he or she removes small wedges of tissue from the area where the nostrils meet the cheeks.

Often, doctors use advanced computer programs to plan the reduction rhinoplasty and simulate the appearance of a patient’s nose after surgery.

Augmentation rhinoplasty is another popular type of nose reshaping surgery. During this treatment, the doctor performs bone or tissue grafting to build up the nasal tipand/or bridge. In many cases, he or she uses cartilage from other parts of the nose, usually the nasal septum. However, if a patient does not have enoughtissue in this area, the doctor may use rib bone, cartilage from other areas, synthetic material, or other biological tissues.

As with reduction rhinoplasty, the doctor carefully plans out the treatment. Many times, he or she uses computer software to create a two-dimensional orthree-dimensional model of the final results.

If a patient has suffered an injury to the nose, he or she may benefit from post-traumatic rhinoplasty. This procedure can address both appearance andfunctionality. Doctors may use this procedure to straighten the nose and correct the nasal septum. Often, post-traumatic patients have suffered a brokennose. In these cases, a doctor may have to re-fracture the nose and re-set it to achieve the desired results. A doctor can usually set a simple broken nosewithin 10 days of the fracture. However, if a patient has suffered a serious nose injury, he or she may have to wait several months before undergoingextensive surgery.

Patients may require reconstructive rhinoplasty if they have lost all or part of their noses to an accident, skin cancer, or another serious illness.During the treatment, a surgeon rebuilds the nose using skin grafts, flap techniques, and other advanced methods. Due to the complex nature of thisprocedure, patients may require multiple surgeries over a period of several months. Additionally, reconstructive rhinoplasty is a specialized procedure, and patients should look for surgeons who have extensive experience in this area.

Ethnic rhinoplasty uses the same methods as other forms of nose reshaping surgery. Typically, ethnic rhinoplasty refers to procedures performed onindividuals of African American, Afro-Caribbean, Asian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern descent. These patients typically have softer nasal contours, and thedoctor takes special care to preserve the unique features of a these patients’ faces.

Ethnic rhinoplasty – or rhinoplasty that provides a natural-looking complement to a patients ethnic features – can be especially difficult to perform, which unfortunately results in a frequent need for revision procedures. Read Full Article

In most cases, doctors advise teenage patients to wait until their noses have stopped growing before they undergo rhinoplasty. There are exceptions, however, especially in cases of trauma or breathing difficulties. When young patients undergo rhinoplasty, the doctor must take special care to protect thestill delicate nasal features. Additionally, a doctor should make sure that the patient is emotionally and mentally prepared for nose reshaping surgery.

Although the nose stops growing around age 16, the shape may change over time. The tip may begin to droop, or the nasal passages may constrict, causingbreathing difficulties. With aging rhinoplasty, a doctor can correct these issues to enhance breathing and give a patient a younger, rejuvenatedappearance.

No matter which type of rhinoplasty a patient requires, the doctor will typically use one of two primary techniques.

Closed rhinoplasty is generally the preferred procedure because all surgical incisions are made inside the nose, eliminating external scarring. Although the incisions arehidden, the surgeon can still access most of the nose to address a range of cosmetic and structural concerns.

Open rhinoplasty gives the surgeon greater access to the cartilage and bone of the nose but it will leave some scar tissue. By creating an incision across the columella(the area of cartilage between the two nostrils) the doctor can lift the skin off the tip of the nose and shape the cartilage very precisely. When healed, the incision leaves a very small, almost negligible scar on the underside of the nose.

Both open and closed rhinoplasty can be extremely effective. The doctor will determine the right technique for each patient, based on the natural shape ofthe nose and the goals for surgery. If the patient desires dramatic changes, or if the doctor is performing post-traumatic rhinoplasty, an open techniquemay work best. This method gives the doctor access to a larger part of the nose. In many cases, it also helps him or her to make small adjustments to thenasal tip. If a patient wants to address the bridge of the nose, closed rhinoplasty may work well. However, because each patient is different, there are nohard and fast rules regarding the “right” procedure to use.

The medical field is rapidly changing, and some doctors use advanced methods to minimize discomfort and recovery time. While these methods are not widelyused, they provide a fascinating glimpse into the future of plastic surgery. These innovative techniques include:

Prior to nose reshaping surgery, there are several steps that patients can take to speed their recovery, minimize their post-surgical discomfort, andreduce the risks of complications.

In the weeks before any surgery, it is important for patients to eat a healthy diet. Proper nutrition will speed healing and minimize the risk ofinfection. In particular, individuals should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Nutrition supplements are alsobeneficial. Doctors may recommend specific supplements, including vitamin A, vitamin C, and bromelain.

At the same time, patients will also need to avoid certain foods and supplements, which could slow healing and cause surgical complications. In particular, patients should steer clear of vitamin E supplements, ginger, gingko, and ginseng. Some homeopathic and herbal supplements can cause complications withanesthesia, so patients should check with their doctors before taking additional nutrition.

Because alcohol can affect the liver’s ability to metabolize correctly, many doctors advise patients to avoid drinking in the weeks leading up to theirsurgeries.

When preparing for rhinoplasty, patients should inform their doctors about all medications they are currently taking. Certain drugs could cause problemsbefore or after surgery. A doctor may temporarily take a patient off of a medication or prescribe a safer alternative. In particular, patients should avoidaspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners.

Tobacco use slows blood flow throughout the body. Because oxygen cannot reach the incision sites very quickly, smokers may face a longer recovery and ahigher risk of infection and unfavorable scarring. Although smokers are not automatically disqualified from rhinoplasty, they should quit the habit for atleast two weeks before and two weeks after the surgery.

Recovery from rhinoplasty can take several weeks, and patients should prepare accordingly. In particular, they should take at least two weeks off of work and arrange for a ride homefrom the hospital or surgical center. If possible, they should find someone who can stay with them for a few days to help with daily tasks. Afterrhinoplasty, chewing can be uncomfortable, so patients should buy plenty of soft foods to eat during the first several days.

The night before their procedures, patients should get a good night’s rest, and they should not eat or drink anything after midnight. Before coming to thehospital or surgical center, they should wash their faces and hair to avoid bacterial contamination. For the same reason, they should avoid makeup andother cosmetic products.

Because there are so many types of rhinoplasty and different goals for the treatment, the procedure varies widely for each person. However, there arecertain steps that are common to all nose reshaping surgeries.

Doctors perform rhinoplasty using one of two sedation methods:

Doctors work with each patient to determine the best type of anesthesia for his or her needs. With both methods, patients do not experience any discomfortduring the surgery. However, some individuals may experience less anxiety, knowing they will be completely asleep.

After the patient is sedated, the surgeon creates tiny incisions inside the nostrils or on the columella. Then he or she carefully lifts the skin to accessthe underlying bone and cartilage. The surgeon can then remove or graft tissues, as needed. Typically, a doctor uses conservative methods to minimize theimpact to the surrounding tissues while still achieving the desired results. When the reshaping process is complete, the doctor lays the skin back downover the new contours of the nose and closes the incisions.

In the initial days after rhinoplasty, it is important that the changes to the nasal tissue be preserved. After closing the incisions made during surgery,a surgeon will place a splint to help retain the new shape of the nose. In some cases, the doctor may also place pieces of gauze, or nasal packing, insidethe nostrils. The material will help reduce bleeding and keep the septum in place. The gauze may cause some discomfort. However, it is typically removedwithin a few days of surgery, and goes a long toward maintaining the results of surgery.

Because the nose plays such a prominent role in the facial structure, many patients choose to have additional treatments along with their nose jobs. Theseprocedures can help to maintain the balance of the face and provide more dramatic results. In most cases, combining rhinoplasty with one or more additionaltreatments is quite safe. However, to ensure safety and good results, patients should choose surgeons who are experienced in all areas of facial plasticsurgery.

Chin augmentation and chin reduction are the two most common treatments to combine with rhinoplasty. To perform chin augmentation, a surgeon places asilicone implant through an incision inside the mouth or just under the chin. In chin reduction, the incisions are placed in the same locations. Then thesurgeon reshapes the chin bone, carefully removing millimeters of material to create a more aesthetically pleasing shape.

With an improved nose, many patients want to enhance the surrounding areas with cheek augmentation. This can be performed in one of three ways. First, asurgeon may place silicone implants, often through incisions on the inside of the mouth. More conservatively, a doctor may recommend fat grafting or dermalfillers.

To perform fat grafting, a doctor uses liposuction to remove unwanted fat cells from another part of the body. Then he or she will purify thecells and inject them at varying depths in the face to create more defined cheekbones and a youthful appearance. Dermal fillers add volume to the face, andin some cases, they can even increase collagen production. The results can last for months, and patients may undergo routine touchups.

Many patients choose to combine rhinoplasty with a facelift for dramatic results and an overall more youthful appearance. This procedure can treat creasesand sagging skin, particularly around the eyes, cheeks, chin, and mouth. There are several types of facelifts, and patients can choose a mid, mini, orlower facelift to address specific areas of concern. Through carefully concealed incisions, the doctor raises the facial muscles, removes unwanted fatdeposits, and trims away extra skin. Following a facelift, patients may look significantly younger.

Like facelift surgery, brow lift surgery eliminates sagging skin and reduces deep creases. However, brow lifts specifically target the forehead and thearea between the eyebrows. The doctor creates an incision along the hairline or the crown of the head. Then he or she lifts the underlying muscles toreduce frown lines, vertical creases, sagging eyebrows, and hooded brows.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a great way to address sagging eyelids and give patients a more alert, youthful appearance. The treatment can addressthe upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The doctor creates tiny incisions in the lash line or along the eyelid crease. Then he or she raises thesurrounding muscles and removes fat deposits.

Rhinoplasty can involve several weeks of recovery, and patients should take special steps to enhance their recovery and ensure good aesthetic results.

During the first 48 hours after surgery, it is important to get plenty of rest. In particular, patients should:

Typically, patients can return to work within two weeks of their surgeries. However, they should continue to monitor their activity level and protect thetender nasal tissues. Among other things, patients should:

It is especially important for patients to make routine follow-up appointments with their surgeons. Usually, the first appointment will take place one weekafter surgery. At this time, doctors will typically remove any stitches and nasal packing. Then patients will have periodic checkups for the next severalmonths.

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most common plastic surgeries performed each year. This procedure allows surgeons to make a number of changes to thestructure of the nose, drastically altering a patient’s appearance. However, as with any other surgical procedure, it is important for individuals tounderstand all possible outcomes and set realistic expectations before undergoing rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty surgery, also known as nose reshaping surgery, can be used to correct a number of aesthetic flaws. The surgery can result in a greater balanceof facial features, the elimination of bumps or unevenness, and a noticeable change in the size of the nose. In order to achieve ideal results, however, itis important for patients to be completely candid with their surgeon prior to surgery.

In the initial surgical consultation, patients should discuss theirspecific needs and aesthetic goals to ensure that these goals are realistic. While rhinoplasty can achieve dramatic results, the procedure will notcompletely alter a patient’s appearance. Rather, it is intended to enhance an individual’s beauty and correct minor to moderate imperfections. Fortunately, even small changes can have major, positive effects on a patient’s overall appearance.

With modern technology, patients can actually get a picture of the results of their rhinoplasty surgery. Digital imaging technology allows surgeons toconstruct 3-D virtual models of a patient’s face and the future appearance. It is important to note, however, that while this 3D model will serve as aguide for the surgeon, there is no guarantee that the nose job will yield those precise results.

Rhinoplasty is unique in that the final results of the surgery can take up to one full year to develop. Side effects such as swelling and bruising aroundthe nose and eyes can hinder the appearance of the nose for the first two to three weeks. While more obvious changes may be visible in the first weeksfollowing surgery, most individuals will need to be patient in regards to the final outcome. In the months following surgery the nose will begin to settlein to its final shape. Because the final results of rhinoplasty take a significant amount of time, doctors usually discourage patients from undergoingrevision rhinoplasty until a full year has passed.

As with almost all forms of plastic surgery, there is a possibility for scarring following rhinoplasty. In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are madeinside the nostrils and will therefore not leave behind any visible scars. In open rhinoplasty, an additional incision made across the columella may leavea small scar behind. Fortunately, due to the size and location of the incision this scar is usually unnoticeable.

Unfortunately, despite a surgeon’s best efforts, in some cases a patient may be unhappy with the results of his or her surgery. This can result fromnumerous causes, including surgical error or unrealistic expectations on the patient’s part. Because the final results of rhinoplasty can take up to a yearto develop, patients should not panic if their noses have not taken their ideal shape in the first few months. If a patient is unhappy with the nose evenafter the final shape has stabilized, there are options for treatment and correction. Depending on the extent of changes that need to be made, a surgeonmay recommend non-surgical nose reshaping or secondary (revision) rhinoplasty.

The most common reason for patients to undergo rhinoplasty surgery is to improve the appearance of their nose. Many individuals feel that the size or shapedoes not match the rest of their facial features, and they choose surgery to bring a harmonious balance to the face. During rhinoplasty, changes can bemade to the bridge, tip, and nostrils, making nose reshaping a versatile procedure. Choosing a qualified surgeon to perform rhinoplasty surgery will ensurethat patients receive the most beneficial outcome. Among the aesthetic rhinoplasty benefits are:

In addition to cosmetic advantages, rhinoplasty can correct health-related issues. The two main functional rhinoplasty benefits are:

When rhinoplasty is performed for functional reasons, insurance may actually cover the cost of the procedure.

In addition to the physical benefits of rhinoplasty, the procedure has psychological benefits as well. Individuals who are unhappy with the size or shapeof their nose often feel self-conscious about their appearance and may suffer from low self-esteem. After undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, however, manypatients report a marked boost in confidence. This benefit alone can be a great reason for patients to choose rhinoplasty.

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty is a safe procedure with few long-term complications. However, all surgeries do carry somerisks. It is important for patients to be aware of these risks so that they can monitor their healing and contact their doctor if they notice anythingunusual.

Though rare, rhinoplasty risks may include:

As stated above, these complications are unlikely. However, patients can take steps to reduce their risks even further. First, they should choose aqualified surgeon, according to the guidelines listed above. Selecting an outstanding doctor, who maintains proper safety standards, can minimize thechances of infection, perforation, and other difficulties. An experienced surgeon can also ensure aesthetically pleasing results.

Second, patients should follow all pre-surgical and post-surgical instructions. These guidelines do not only help to minimize discomfort; they also speedhealing and protect patient safety.

Finally, individuals should maintain open communication with their doctors throughout the process. They should be as specific as possible regarding theirtreatment goals, and they should be honest about their medical history, medications, smoking habits, and related concerns.

Although long-term complications are rare, rhinoplasty can have some temporary side effects. These include:

Although these side effects will eventually go away on their own, patients can take precautions to minimize their severity and speed recovery. Painmedication can reduce discomfort, and antibiotics can help control the symptoms of sinusitis. Some surgeons may prescribe drugs immediately aftertreatment. Patients should take these medications as directed. They should always finish each prescription, unless otherwise instructed by their doctors.

The other way to minimize side effects is to get plenty of rest. Patients should follow the tips listed above, in regards to recovery. They should adhereto any additional guidelines provided by their doctors.

Revision (secondary) rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is performed when a patient is not satisfied with the outcome of his or her initial procedure. In some cases, patients may beunhappy with the appearance of their noses, while others may experience functional difficulties after surgery. Additionally, a patient may need a secondaryprocedure if he or she suffers traumatic injury following the first nose reshaping surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty is similar to primary rhinoplasty, and it can be performed as an “open” or “closed” procedure. In closed rhinoplasty, the surgicalincisions are made inside the nose to eliminate the appearance of scarring. With open rhinoplasty, an additional incision is made across the columella. While this leaves a small scar, it gives the surgeon more access to the nasal tissue and bone. The goals of your rhinoplasty revision will dictate the typeof surgery you receive.

Secondary rhinoplasty differs from the primary procedure in that it may require cartilage or bone grafting. If too much tissue or bone was removed in thefirst surgery, the doctor will need to replace this in order to achieve the desired look. Often, cartilage is taken from the ear or other areas of thenose. In rare cases, it is harvested from a rib, in what is known as a costal cartilage graft.

Secondary rhinoplasty procedures may also be more difficultto perform than traditional rhinoplasty surgery because the septum may have been altered or partly removed during the first surgery. Additionally, secondary rhinoplasty may be more complex if the skin is thicker and more difficult to work with or if the patient’s airway has been impeded.

Patients who are unhappy with their previous nose job results are candidates for secondary rhinoplasty. Whether the nose is deemed too small, too large, orimproperly shaped, a skilled surgeon may be able to correct the problem. Patients who experience breathing difficulties following rhinoplasty may also optto undergo a second procedure. Factors influencing candidacy for revision rhinoplasty include:

The nose is the most noticeable feature on a person’s face. For many individuals, the size, shape, or angle of their nose can have a huge impact on how they feel about their appearance. At Beautologie Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer high-quality rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, offering solutions to patients to help them achieve exquisite and natural-looking results. One of the most common plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty can make a dramatic difference in both facial appearance and self-esteem. Our experienced rhinoplasty surgeons use advanced techniques to reshape the tip, bridge, and nostrils to the desired size and shape for the most aesthetically appealing and functional results. Our experienced nose surgeons strive to provide the best rhinoplasty Bakersfield has to offer.

The best candidates for nose surgery include those who are at least 16 years of age for females and 18 for males and are looking to improve their appearance. Rhinoplasty candidates must also be healthy and motivated regarding their upcoming procedure. Nose surgery can meet certain goals, such as resizing the nostrils, straightening a nose that is crooked, reshaping the bridge and tip, and changing the angle between the nose and lips.

Individuals who are good candidates for nose surgery must meet with a nose surgeon of ours for a consultation prior to the procedure. During the consultation, an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon from our practice will discuss with the patient his or her ideal appearance. To make the process easier, patients should bring pictures from magazines and other sources of noses they find appealing. Our surgeons will then analyze the patient’s nose and lend their professional opinion regarding what should be done for their nose job. They will simulate what the patient’s new nose will look like after surgery. Our surgeons are also more than willing to address any questions or concerns patients may have during the consultation. We want you to be comfortable and feel you’re getting the best rhinoplasty Bakersfield offers. To schedule a consultation with a rhinoplasty surgeon from our practice, contact our Bakersfield facility today.

Preparation for rhinoplasty should begin weeks before the scheduled surgery. Patients should refrain from taking aspirin and blood thinners, and they should take vitamin supplements to promote faster healing. The day before rhinoplasty, patients should make sure they have all the supplies they will need during their recovery time, such as ice and gauze bandages. Patients should also stock up on easily digestible foods such as soup, crackers, and juice. Patients are advised to wash their face thoroughly the night before surgery to eliminate bacteria, and to refrain from eating anything until after the procedure.

The day of rhinoplasty, patients should arrive at our practice early, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. They should be accompanied by a friend or family member who can drive them home after the procedure. These simple steps can help ensure a successful surgery and recovery period.

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Our surgeons perform open rhinoplasty as their preferred nose surgery technique. The open procedure allows the surgeons to have the most access to nose cartilage and bone. In performing the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision beneath the columella, or the thin strip of skin that separates the nostrils. The surgeon then lifts the skin off the nose and reshapes the cartilage. When the nose has been reformed, the skin is replaced and the incision is closed using stitches. Finally, the surgeon packs the nostrils with gauze to help ensure the nose retains its new shape. For a complete facial makeover, patients can combine other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift and eyelid surgery, with their rhinoplasty surgery.

While recovery from nose surgery takes lots of patience, it is very rewarding in the end. Patients will experience some side effects can last up to two weeks, but prescribed medication and cold compresses should help alleviate any discomfort. Patients are advised to follow all post-operation instructions from their surgeon, which includes staying in bed and keeping their head elevated for 24 hours. Patients are also advised not to blow their nose or bend over for at least a week to lessen any aggravation and swelling of the area. Nasal packing can be removed after a few days, and stitches can be removed after a few weeks.

Although patients can return to their normal routine one week after their rhinoplasty, they should refrain from participating in sports or weight lifting for two to eight weeks. Following the surgeon’s post-operation instructions closely will make the recovery process faster, smoother, and more successful. We want you to not only love the results, but experience some of the most comfortable rhinoplasty Bakersfield provides.

While the results of rhinoplasty are immediately visible, they will continue to settle in over the course of six months to a year. Although some scarring will be visible at the base of the columella, it will be minimal and should fade over time. Our patients are generally pleased with the results of their nose surgery. Rhinoplasty offers patients better facial symmetry and a more appealing nose shape and size. Some patients may also find they can breathe easier with their new nose. Tucson plastic surgeon takes on difficult cases from around the world – Arizona Daily Star

Dr. Frederick J. Menick, a surgeon in private practice, is an expert in rhinoplasty who primarily rebuilds noses after birth defects, trauma, autoimmune disease and cancer. Noses are also sometimes destroyed due to cocaine use, he said in an interview.

But the most common reason Menick rebuilds noses is cancer when the nose has been lost due to either skin or nasal cavity cancer, he said.

Most of Menicks patients come from outside of Tucson. On Tuesday he operated on a woman from Canada. He also has current patients from New Jersey, New York City, Miami, Brazil, Iran and China.

The traditional approach to plastic surgery and facial reconstruction when I finished my training was to basically get the wound healed, he recalled. The aesthetic or cosmetic results were very unpredictable, if not poor.

Since that time, Menick has helped develop approaches to improve cosmetic results with new techniques, and says he places a high priority on aesthetics.

If its done properly you can hope for some amazing results, he said. Theres always going to be a scar. But most scars look bad because the structure that has been rebuilt looks bad.

If the nose structure is built well and the scars are strategically placed along the border of the nose, then the scars become inconsequential, he said.

Menick performs his surgeries at Carondelet St. Josephs Hospital in Tucson and has been practicing in Tucson since 1982. He was formerly the chief of plastic surgery at the University of Arizona and Southern Arizonas Veterans Affairs hospital.

When I came to Tucson I was a general plastic surgeon, but early on developed an interest in nose reconstruction, said Menick, who has written two textbooks on facial and nasal reconstruction and routinely gives lectures on the subject.

My practice in the last 15 or 20 years is limited to nasal problems. I get a lot of patient referrals from other surgeons around the world, he said.

Menick earned his medical degree at Yale. He completed residencies at Stanford, the UA, the University of California Irvine and did advanced fellowships in plastic surgery at the University of Miami and at Queen Victoria Hospital in England.

The Many Options for Rhinoplasty and Plastic Surgery for College Students in San Jose and Bay Area – Digital Journal

Stanford, CA – The dreaded surgical operation can take on monstrous proportions for college students, who are already surviving on a shoe-string budget, and possibly have a big loan to repay on time. Before panicking, or simply agreeing to pay for plastic surgery, here is a small guide they can follow, shared by Gloria Watson on the Stanford College Puzzle blog.

Whether it is a nose job, rhinoplasty in San Jose, or plastic surgery in the Bay Area, there are many logical ways to approach the financial challenge and take the right action. Panicking about how to pay for plastic surgery is easy, but can actually cost a lot if affordable options are missed.

Firstly, the student must decide to spend some time on research on how much a plastic surgery may cost in San Jose and other states according to the type of facility, says Gloria. One can search for Rhinoplasty San Jose, and use other keywords to see that costs of treatment for say, Bay Area rhinoplasty are really different at other locations. This method requires some time and does not fit well for emergency cases.

“A rhinoplasty in San Jose wouldnt cost the same as one in Orange County. Also, it wouldnt have the same results,” says Gloria.

A health insurance plan is also important and can save much money if it covers a wide range of surgeries. Those who already have a plan can check and see if it is suitable for covering all expected medical cases. Those who cannot afford a separate health insurance scheme should check if they can be included in their parents schemes.

Other options are checking for an affordable or free health care nearby, and student assistance programs. College towns often have affordable plans and treatment spaces for students, and with good grades a student assistant program may also be available.

Doctor says it could be risky to find plastic surgeon on Instagram – WGN-TV

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

CHICAGO –Social media is the go-to tool for consumers interested in cosmetic procedures. Social media sites are an open marketplace, but just one click can lead you to the wrong hands. A local doctor dug deep and what he found is a dangerous and misleading trend.

Instagram is a vast visual showcase. Fashion, travel, food, family its all there. And one of the more popular topics is plastic surgery.

Instagram is a uniquely visual social medium, and plastic surgery is a uniquely visual surgical specialty. And I think thats one reason plastic surgery and Instagram have really taken off in this marriage online, Dr. Clark Schierle, Northwestern Medicine plastic surgeon, said.

Dr. Schierle is a plastic surgeon who decided to take a closer look at the posts highlighting many of the same procedures he performs.

On any given day, there can be more than a million to sift through from tummy tucks to breast augmentation to rhinoplasty. But buyer beware.

An alarming minority, 18 percent in this case, were actually from board-certified plastic surgeons or what we would consider the gold standard for delivering these procedures, he said.

Instead of his fellow colleagues, Dr. Schierle found an eclectic group of providers marketing their cosmetic procedure services on Instagram from non-board certified surgeons to dentists, even a barber touting medical-grade chemical peels.

Theres always going to be people out there misrepresenting themselves, overplaying or spinning their credentials. Ultimately, its our job to clean up messes left behind by other providers, Dr. Schierle said.

One procedure Dr. Schierle used as an example was a lip filler procedure that used silicone.

First and foremost there is no FDA-approved silicone lip filler. The results were uneven. She was even having some discomfort and would develop infections in these areas, he said.

One rhinoplasty patient blames herself for not doing more research on the doctor, who may have overplayed his credentials and experience online.

When I operated on this patient, it looked like the complex architecture and the cartilage on the tip of the nose had been completely distorted, and there were pieces of cartilage in the anatomically incorrect location, Dr. Schierle said.

Botched procedures arent just unsightly they can be life-threatening. Its a message well-qualified and experienced providers are trying to spread but are finding themselves drowned out on the crowded social media landscape.

Many of these less scrupulous providers do have less qualms about crossing the line into something that may be little less tasteful but far more grabby from a visual standpoint. So visually more stimulating imagery is going to create more interest and generate more likes and more shares and become more viral, Dr. Schierle said.

You have to dig deep and go beyond the flashy post and check out credentials, experience and training. But it can be confusing.

There is a difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. A board-certified plastic surgeon performs both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

A board-certified cosmetic surgeon focuses solely on elective procedures.

3-D Origami Models Offered To Demonstrate Labiaplasty Procedures For Patient Education – Markets Insider

NEW YORK, Aug. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ –A newly published letter in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, the peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), revealed a new methodology to provide labiaplasty simulation utilizing a 3-D origami model.

A group of three surgeons, Turkia Abbed, MD, Florence Mussat, MD, and Mimis Cohen, MD, FACS, published this letter to the editor in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, highlighting their novel approach to demonstrate for their patients what a labiaplasty would look like using a 3-D origami model. The surgeons provided this low tech offering in lieu of traditional patient before and after photos, a method they discovered was less intimidating for their patients.

“As requests for labiaplasty continue to increase, I needed to develop a new method of conveying how the procedure works for my patients, as they were having a difficult time visualizing what the results would be. I wanted to give them a personalized explanation that didn’t rely on other labiaplasty patient photos. I often sketched diagrams during my consults, and took this one step further when I started to draw and cut the diagram, creating a 3-D model where the patients could truly envision their own personal labiaplasty outcomes,” explains Dr. Florence Mussat.

The work of Dr. Cohen and his team comes at a time where requests for the once niche procedurecorrection of labia minora hypertrophy (excessive inner labia tissue) are on a steady rise. According to the 2016 annual statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, labiaplasty increased by 23.2% between 2015 2016 alone, with more than 35% of all plastic surgeons now offering this procedure in their practices. Reasons cited by patients range from the purely aesthetic to discomfort in clothing, exercise, and pain during sexual intercourse.

The low-cost demonstration utilizing only paper, staples, scissors and markers provides a more personalized predictor of outcomes and allays patient trepidation surrounding real patient photos. Forty-four patients between the ages of 17 66 years received consultations with these surgeons between January of 2015 to December of 2016. Of those 44, 28 opted to undergo central wedge labiaplasty resulting in a consultation to surgery conversion rate of 64%. Patients reported better understanding of the technique, expected outcomes and possible complications. All patients reported increased confidence in their decision to undergo labiaplasty after hands-on education with the surgeons’ origami models.

This new form of pre-surgical demonstration provides a hands-on 3D reference for labiaplasty and is simple, inexpensive, and effective in patient education. This method is applicable to all female patients independent of education and can easily be reproduced by all plastic surgeons who hope to alleviate concerns and simulate patient outcomes.

Our obsession with selfies has led to a rise in ‘liquid nose jobs’ – AOL

Our obsession with selfies is making more and more women get “liquid nose jobs,” according to the New York Post. Though many people haven’t heard of this procedure, it’s becoming more and more popular.

A liquid nose job is when a doctor injects fillers to shape the nose; think hylauronic acid. The same kind that’s used to plump up lips, fill out baggy circles under the eyes or to fill out chin lines, according to KHOU.

But there are some major differences between nonsurgical rhinoplasty and the real thing.

It takes about 5 minutes, the results are immediate, unlike spending weeks out of commission with a real nose job, results last about a year and it’s way cheaper!

Based on New York Post estimates, $800 is a steal compared to $15,000 for an actual nose job.

But there are risks, according to the outlet, such as compressed blood flow to the nose or blindness if the injection hits an artery.

The Post reports that instead of women showing their doctor’s pics of celebs, they’re armed with selfies that have been touched up with filters they’ve used to get their perfect nose.

But there are some schnozes it won’t work for. Liquid nose jobs can’t shrink your nose or hide a large hook.

So if you don’t want to go under the knife, doctors compare the procedure to the next generation of makeup.

Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a liquid nose job!

Rhinoplasty patient says doctor took and distributed operation photos of her without consent – The Pennsylvania Record

PITTSBURGH In recently filed litigation, a rhinoplasty patient alleges photos of her in a pre-operative and operative state were taken and published publicly without her consent by her doctor and his medical office.

Nicolette S. Lepresti of Westmoreland County filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on July 11 versus James L. Fernau M.D. and Accent on Body Cosmetic Surgery, both of Pittsburgh.

On or about Oct. 17, 2016, plaintiff came to Fernaus office complaining of difficulty breathing through her nose. Fernau diagnosed Lepresti with a deviated septum, hypertrophy of her nasal turbinates, several nasal obstruction and nasal vestibular stenosis and recommended a rhinoplasty operation to correct these issues.

During this consultation, Fernau and/or a member of his staff took pre-operative photographs of Lepresti. Further, the plaintiff signed a document titled Consent for Purposes of Treatment, Payment and Healthcare Operations, which included the phrase: I agree for my image to be used for my medical record, but NOT FOR medical publication.

On Nov. 11, Lepresti signed a consent form to undergo the rhinoplasty procedure. Before the operation, Fernau repeatedly asked Lepresti to give consent for the defendants to create and distribute photographs and video of her procedure for the medical community and the public, pressuring her to sign a document to that effect.

Lepresti refused, and declined to sign the release form.

The rhinoplasty procedure took place on Nov. 17 and photos were taken of Lepresti and posted to various social media accounts belonging to the defendants, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, both individually and as part of a collage of other procedures performed by Fernau.

The photographs were not taken for any medical purpose and were not included in plaintiffs medical chart. Rather, the photographs were taken to promote and/or publicize the medical practice of defendant Fernau and/or defendant AOB and for the defendants own economic gain, the lawsuit states.

The photographs and social media postings were public and seen by thousands of individuals, the suit says.

On Jan. 25, plaintiff requested her medical records from Fernaus office and then discovered that the social media postings containing said photos were deleted. Lepresti received no compensation for the photos in question.

For counts of invasion of privacy/appropriation of likeness, wrongful disclosure of confidential medical information, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress, the plaintiff is seeking damages that exceed the arbitration limits of the Court, and a jury trial in this matter.

The plaintiff is represented by Neil R. Rosen and Andrew G. Rothey of Rosen Louik & Perry, in Pittsburgh.

Rhinoplasty Chicago | Nose Job | Dr. Placik

Cosmetic nose surgery can achieve dramatic results for men and women who have noticeable bumps, asymmetry or other issues with their noses. It can also offer more subtle results for people who just want to correct a slight bump or indentation. The degree of improvement depends upon your existing anatomy and what you want to achieve.

Dr. Placik is careful to assess the appearance of your nose in relation to your other facial features. After surgery, it is important for your nose to be in harmony with your overall profile, and Dr. Placik may recommend other facial cosmetic procedures such as chin augmentation to create the optimal proportions.

His Chicago rhinoplasty can be performed in an outpatient surgery setting or in a hospital, depending on your preferences. During surgery, you will be under general anesthesia so you will sleep comfortably throughout the procedure. To perform cosmetic nose surgery, Dr. Placik makes incisions inside the nose and then revises the shape of the cartilage and bone. He may also use an open technique, which allows a direct view of and access to these structures.

Within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, you should begin to see early results, as bruising and swelling subside. The nose will continue to subtly change shape and contour for up to a year after your surgery. It is common for relatives or friends to report that they dont see a major difference after surgery. Do not consider such reactions to be an indication that your procedure wasnt a success. The intention, after all, is not to create a nose that draws undue attention, but rather one that blends in a natural way with the overall appearance of your face.

From the TOWIE girls Lauren Pope and Lauren Goodger to Charlotte Crosby and Katie Price we take a look a celebs who have admitted to cosmetic procedures

And his worse fears are then confirmed as the consultant explains: The issue is that what we call the soft tissue envelopethat’s the skin.

By you having three surgeries in a period of 12 to 15 months destroyed your tissue. The skin’s no good

Your nose on the inside you have no airway. And it’s short. So this is all scarred together. And now, since you just had surgery three months ago, it’s going to scar down more. It’s in a healing phase,

If you try to insult your skin one more time now while it’s healing, there’s a high possibility that if you let one of these doctors touch your nose now, this will turn back and then die and fall off.
