What is HCG?

HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is a glycoprotein composed of 244 amino acids.

The use of HCG for weight loss was pioneered by British endocrinologist A.T.W. Simeons while studying pregnant woman on an extremely low calorie diet in India in the 1950s. He thought it was a medical oxymoron that pregnant women in a 3rd world country just devastated by war, would walk everywhere, work and eat just a handful of calories produce normal weight and normal height babies. His medical logic determined that these babies should be malnourished. This led him to discover that when a woman is pregnant, her body produces HCG. Also while in India, Dr. Simeons treated fat boys with pituitary problems with low doses of HCG. He observed both lost fat rather than lean muscle tissue.

How does the HCG Diet work?

HCG mobilizes the adipose tissue (abnormal fat). There are 3 types of fat.

A pregnant womans body will produce over 1 million IU (International Units) of HCG to mobilize the abnormal fat full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to nourish the unborn fetus. Dr. Simeons wrote, In pregnancy it would be most undesirable if the fetus were offered ample food only when there is a high influx from the intestinal tract. Ideal nutritional conditions for the fetus can only be achieved when the mothers blood is continually saturated with food, regardless of whether she eats or not, as otherwise a period of starvation might hamper the steady growth of the embryo.

The use of HCG in conjunction with VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet) produces weight loss but more specifically, fat loss. The HCG Diet will reshape your body. Your body needs reserve and structural fat but does not need abnormal fat to survive. By using HCG, your body releases the unlocked calories and nutrients stored in your abnormal fat. Dr. Simeons also wrote, When a male patient hears that he is about to be put into a condition which in some respects resembles pregnancy, he is usually shocked and horrified. The Promise

Take a “natural” hormone the body makes during pregnancy — and lose a lot of weight? That’s the promise that’s turned the hCG Diet — named after that hormone — into a craze that just won’t quit. If you also go on an ultra-low-calorie diet, backers claim, hCG can reset your metabolism so you lose as much as a pound a day without feeling hungry or weak.

Here’s what the science says: Any super-low-cal diet will result in weight loss. Most studies have found that hCG (stands for human chorionic gonadotropin) has nothing to do with it.

The hCG diet limits you to 500 calories a day for 8 weeks while taking hCG, either by getting a shot or by taking a homeopathic product, such as oral drops, pellets, or sprays, which you can buy at the store.

None of this is approved by the FDA for weight loss. The shots themselves are legal, as long as a health care provider gives them to you. (They’re approved to treat fertility issues.) But over-the-counter hCG products are not. The FDA has sent warning letters to several companies that market homeopathic hCG products.

You won’t be eating much. The diet lets you have two meals a day, lunch and dinner. Each meal has to include one protein, one vegetable, one bread, and one fruit.

You can broil or grill veal, beef, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp as long you dont eat any visible fat. No salmon, eel, tuna, herring, or dried or pickled fish are allowed.

Vegetable choices include spinach, chard, chicory, beet greens, green salad, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, and cabbage.

Bread can be one breadstick or one piece of melba toast.

For fruit, you can choose an orange, an apple, a handful of strawberries, or half a grapefruit. The diet allows as much water, coffee, and tea as you want. You can also have up to 1 tablespoon of milk per day.

You can use sugar substitutes but not sugar to sweeten drinks. Butter and oils aren’t allowed.

It’s very hard to stick with the strict calorie limit. Not only is it uncomfortable to live on just 500 calories a day, it can be dangerous. Its impossible to meet all your nutritional needs on so few calories. You may not get enough protein, either. If you’re getting less than 1,200 calories a day, it’s going to be challenging to get enough vitamins and minerals without supplements.

Doctors sometimes recommend a very-low-calorie diet (under 1,000 calories per day) if someone is obese and has a medical condition such as high blood pressure, but these diets are always carefully supervised by a doctor.

Vegetarians and vegans: Its fans say anyone can follow the hCG diet. But that doesnt mean its safe, especially for vegetarians. The diet’s creators say that vegetarians would have to drink extra skim milk to make up for not getting protein from meat and other sources. Because it includes dairy, it’s not a vegan diet.

Gluten-free: This isn’t a gluten-free diet.

HCG Diet Research Study | The Dr. Oz Show

There is an immense amount of controversy surrounding the HCG Diet. This piece will clarify many of the misconceptions and confusions surrounding this diet. The information contained herein has been developed over years of research to clarify if, and how, this hormone is affecting dieters. Keep in mind there are many opinions on the topic, yet this piece is written from my research experience, and to summarize talking points from the March 14, 2012 airing of The Dr. Oz Show.

History of the HCG Diet

Dr. ATW Simeons conducted an experimental treatment involving HCG injections, obese patients, and a special diet. The results of this study were outlined in the now infamous Pounds and Inches manuscript, written in 1954. Once this manuscript became public, it ushered in the use of HCG for weight loss, but it was not accepted as a method of treatment by the FDA or general medicine. Why? The studies in the 1970s and early 1980s failed to show how HCG was working to aid in weight loss. It doesnt make people lose faster; it makes people lose differently. No study to date has shown this, until my most recent clinical trial.

Why Do I Study HCG?

When I first began my examination of the use of HCG with a low-calorie diet, I found that there was little information on it. However, through the use of this regimen, I produced an astounding weight loss in a childhood friend who was desperate. He had struggled with obesity his entire life, and with two family members that had undergone gastric bypass, he was ready to try anything. He said, If you can help me lose weight, then youre onto something!

With daily injections of HCG and a strict diet he swore he would never be able to stick to (but he did), he lost 46 pounds in 6 weeks. In addition, his pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol virtually disappeared. The success spoke for itself. However, I now had a much bigger job ahead of me. I had to discover why it worked.

My Study Findings

In my first retrospective research study conducted from 2010-2011, I analyzed hundreds of patients. This was a large ongoing gathering of data to find proper doses by analyzing blood levels of HCG. In the process of studying the blood levels of the hormone, I found that patients using an oral form of HCG (drops or pellets) had no detectable HCG in the bloodstream. I concluded that HCG is unable to be absorbed by mouth.

Additional studies included the analysis of weekly EKGs and electrolytes in all study patients on a low-calorie diet to monitor safety. There was no significant change in cardiac function or blood electrolytes. However, it must be noted that the patients were all appropriately screened by a physician and a cardiologist prior to their participation in the study to make sure they were healthy enough for this diet. It is important for anyone considering a low-calorie diet to see their physician first to make sure they are a good candidate.

In my next set of studies, I conducted ongoing clinical trials. There were four randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies for which the usable data was pooled and analyzed. This meant we tested HCG patients against Placebo patients on the same diet. It was shown that both groups, HCG and placebo, lost weight, but their body structure in terms of fat and muscle were significantly different in the end. This data was revealed for the first time on the March 14, 2012 airing of The Dr. Oz Show.

The large graph shown to the audience illustrated the difference between HCG and Placebo.The HCG group lost an average of 13 pounds in a month, and the Placebo group lost an average of 15 pounds in a month. The weight loss in each group is similar. The striking difference is that the HCG group lost only 2 pounds of muscle, but the Placebo group lost 5 pounds of muscle. This was a significant difference. Anytime muscle is lost from the body frame, it hurts metabolism and puts someone at risk for regaining weight; this is what happens with Placebo or diet alone.

This leads us to conclude that the likely reason why HCG helps someone lose weight differently and better than with diet alone is because it spares muscle. This also helps explain why I do not see rebound weight gain with my patients. This is the first modern clinical trial to demonstrate how HCG may be working for lasting weight loss.

Why are people claiming that HCG causes regaining of weight?

The answer can be very simple. Many people who claim to have lost weight with HCG have only used the drops, which we now know cannot be absorbed. It is the same as dieting alone. Thats why people gain the weight back. The only way we have been able to demonstrate a protection against regaining weight is with the use of HCG injections.

What about recent studies?

There have not been any trials published in over 20 years. My trial is the first to show the difference in body composition between HCG and placebo.

Does this diet have to be done at 500 calories?

Any appropriate diet created by a nutritionist or weight-loss physician should involve a calculation of protein requirements to avoid muscle wasting. There should also be a consideration of activity level when planning an appropriate regimen. Dr. Emmas Protocol does not require the use of 500 calories.

Why is this form of treatment still controversial?

The majority of studies conducted in the 1970s and 1980s looked strictly at weight loss, which wasnt the whole picture. Through my clinical trials, it is now becoming evident that the value of using HCG is as an aid to protect muscle mass, and strengthen metabolism over time. These are the new parameters I am studying in my clinical trials.

Is this a Do-It-Yourself Diet?

This is not a Do-It-Yourself diet. If you are considering trying this diet, you should make sure it is done appropriately through a knowledgeable physician, or enroll in a clinical trial.

For the drinks, they should only contain artificial sugar. Never add sugar, even to your coffee or tea. A bit of milk is safe to add in these drinks (but keep the limit to a spoonful, every 24 hours). ALWAYS keep this list on hand. It contains the only foods approved for the HCG drops main diet phase (Phase 2 or Core Phase). Stick to this list if you dont want to frustrate the HCG diet drops efforts to help you lose weight.

1) Was it harder/easier than you expected? Doing the HCG diet was easier than expected for me, some days were harder than others but with abit of will power it was easy to over come them.

True story: A few years ago, a fabulously fit friend of mine was paid a substantial amount of money by a popular diet pill company to use his image in their advertising. The catch? His current competition-ready state was the “after” picture and then he had to quickly gain some weight, lose his tan, and pose pouty for the “before” shot.

This kind of duplicity, along with photoshop, misleading labeling, and other trickery is rampant in the diet supplement industry and has been since the turn of the century. And I mean the one 113 years ago. That’s why it was so surprising when the FDA came down hard on the hCG diet, declaring it “fraudulent”, “dangerous,” and “illegal.” What’s so bad about this particular diet supplement that makes it so much worse than all the other fakes on the market?

What is hCG? Human chorionic gonadotropina hormone produced during pregnancy to help the baby grow, and while it has been used for different purposes in the medical community for decades, it has recently become the centerpiece of a fad diet that uses hCG drops, shots, or pills to suppress appetite and cause weight loss. Here’s what you need to know about the hCG diet plan:

1. The hCG diet works for weight loss. My dad lost 30 pounds in 40 days on the hCG diet plan except that he was too cheap to buy the hCG drops so instead he just did the prescribed diet plan. How does the hCG dietwork? You eat about 500 calories each day of specific types of protein (limited to chicken breast, beef, veal, fresh white fish, crab, lobster, or shrimp), certain vegetables, fruits, and grains, according to Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, M.D.’s bookPounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity, which is the recognized protocol for the diet.It turns out when you only eat 600 low-carb calories per day, you lose a lot of weight. Go figure. (BTWcutting calories to lose weight will almost certainly backfire.)

2. Almost none of the hCG supplements contain actual hCG. Even if the hormone did work to suppress appetite, true hCG requires a doctor and a prescription to dispense. Most of the supplements are sold as “homeopathic,” which is industry code for containing no real hCG.

3. It’s not “homeopathic.” To be considered a homeopathic treatment by the FDA it needs to appear in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, which hCG does not. Elizabeth Miller, the FDA’s team leader on internet and health fraud, concludes, “So they are unapproved drugs and are illegal.” She adds the drugs are also not approved for weight loss.

4. It’s often very, very expensive. And price is no indicator of whether you’re even getting the real thing.

5. There are no clinical trials or rigorous studies that support the hCG diet plan. Miller says, “In the case of the homeopathic hCG remedies, people think that if theyre losing weight, hGC must be working. But the data simply does not support thisany weight loss is from severe calorie restriction. Not from the hCG.”

The hCG diet only adds to the weight-loss confusion out there. (Be sure you’re not falling for any of the top nine most popular diet myths.) Quick fixes can be tempting for anyone trying to lose weight, but definitely skip this extreme diet and go for good nutrition and regular exercise instead. It’s not as exciting, but your wallet and waistline will thank youand you’re much more likely to keep the weight off for good.
